About Al Bhed

Al Bhed is the language of Spira’s machina-loving outcasts in Final Fantasy X, and secretly one of gaming’s cleverest tricks. It isn’t a new vocabulary at all, but a substitution cipher of English: swap the right letters and “Oui” becomes “You”.

In the game you collect 26 Al Bhed Primers to gradually understand Rikku’s people. Here you can skip straight to fluency: Krunes applies the exact cipher from the game, preserving capitals and punctuation, in both directions.

  • The cipher maps E→A, H→R, O→U… which is why “you” becomes “oui”.
  • In Japanese versions, Al Bhed is a kana-substitution cipher instead.
  • Vowels map to vowels and consonants to consonants, keeping Al Bhed pronounceable.
