About Huttese

Huttese is the gravel-voiced trade language of the Star Wars underworld, spoken by Jabba the Hutt, Watto, Sebulba and half the cantina. Sound designer Ben Burtt based it loosely on Quechua, and it has grown into the most-heard alien language in the saga.

Unlike Aurebesh, Huttese is a language, not an alphabet, it has its own words. Krunes translates using the canon vocabulary where it exists (achuta = hello, sleemo = slimeball, moulee-rah = money) and generates consistent Huttese-styled words for everything else, so your sentences always sound like they belong in Mos Espa.

  • “Achuta” means hello; “mee jewz ku” is goodbye.
  • Ben Burtt modelled Huttese sounds on Quechua, the Incan language.
  • “Sleemo”, Anakin’s insult for Sebulba, literally maps to “slimeball”.
  • Canon dictionary words translate exactly; other words are Huttese-styled and deterministic.
