About Caesar

The Caesar cipher is where cryptography begins: Julius Caesar protected military orders by shifting every letter three places down the alphabet, trusting that his enemies, as Suetonius dryly noted, could not read them. A becomes D, B becomes E, and VENI VIDI VICI becomes YHQL YLGL YLFL.

Twenty centuries later it encrypts the end-credit messages of Gravity Falls season one and the first puzzle of every escape room. Krunes uses the classic +3 shift in both directions.

  • Caesar’s own shift was 3; his nephew Augustus used a lazier shift of 1.
  • Gravity Falls season one credits are all Caesar-3, season two graduated to Atbash and Vigenère.
  • ROT13 is just a Caesar cipher with a shift of 13.
  • With only 25 possible shifts, brute-forcing it is a beginner cryptographer’s first victory.
