About Atbash
Atbash simply mirrors the alphabet: A trades places with Z, B with Y, and so on to the middle. It is one of the oldest ciphers known, scribes used it in the Hebrew Bible, where “Sheshach” in the Book of Jeremiah is Atbash for Babylon.
Its beautiful property: encoding and decoding are the same operation. Run any text through twice and you are back where you started. Gravity Falls, Assassin’s Creed and half the puzzle-hunt genre have borrowed it since.
- The name comes from Hebrew letters: Aleph-Tav-Bet-Shin, first, last, second, second-last.
- Atbash appears in the Book of Jeremiah, making it over 2,500 years old.
