About Dragon Runes
The dragons of Skyrim write the way they fight, in slashes. Each rune of the dragon alphabet is a cluster of claw marks, as if gouged into rock by three talons and a dewclaw. This is the script of Dovahzul, the language of the Thu’um, whose Words of Power shatter mountains: Fus… Ro… Dah!
Krunes transliterates English letter-by-letter into claw-carved runes in the dragon style. For the full constructed language, grammar, vocabulary and canon words, the fan-built Dovahzul dictionary is a wonderful rabbit hole; for turning your name into something a dovah would respect, you are in the right place.
- The canon dragon alphabet has 34 runes, including combined letters like “aa” and “ei”.
- Every word wall in Skyrim is written in these runes and grants a Word of Power.
- “Dovahkiin” means Dragonborn: dovah (dragon) + kiin (born).
- The runes were designed to look like marks a dragon’s three claws could actually carve.
