About Braille

Braille encodes each letter in a 2×3 cell of raised dots, a system Louis Braille perfected in 1824, at age 15, adapting a military “night writing” code. It remains one of the most elegant encodings ever designed: six dots, sixty-four combinations, every written language on Earth.

Beyond its real-world importance, braille patterns have become a favourite of puzzle hunts, escape rooms and games like Fez and The Witness-style cryptics. Krunes converts to Grade 1 (uncontracted) braille using Unicode braille cells, and decodes them right back.

  • The first ten letters use only the top four dots; K–T add one bottom dot.
  • Numbers reuse letters A–J behind a number sign ⠼.
  • Unicode has all 256 possible 8-dot braille cells built in.
  • This is visual braille for puzzles and learning, real accessibility requires proper contracted braille.
