About Gnommish

Gnommish is the fairy script of the Artemis Fowl books, and Eoin Colfer’s best trick: a secret message runs along the bottom of every page, waiting for readers patient enough to decode it. Just like Artemis himself did.

Though the People guard their tongue jealously, their script is a substitution alphabet for English (the books’ border text decodes to bonus stories and jokes). Krunes writes your words in curling fairy glyphs fit for the Book of the People.

  • Every Artemis Fowl novel hides a decodable Gnommish message in its page borders.
  • The hidden texts include fairy proverbs and extra story content.
  • In-universe, Artemis decodes the Fairy Book in chapter one, it takes fans a bit longer.
  • Colfer’s “Gnommish” is written boustrophedon-style in-world; fan practice reads left-to-right.
