About Kryptonian
Before Krypton died, it wrote. The Kryptonian alphabet, standardised for DC in the 2004 series Superman: Birthright, turns crystalline geometry into letters, the same design language as the Fortress of Solitude and the House of El crest. Yes, that famous “S” is not an S at all: it is the El family sigil, meaning hope.
The modern alphabet maps one-to-one to English, which is why comics carefully letter background Kryptonian as real messages. Krunes renders yours in shard-glyph style fit for a Fortress console.
- The Superman shield is the House of El crest, Kryptonian for “hope”.
- DC standardised a transliterable alphabet in Superman: Birthright (2004).
- Earlier comics used “Kryptonese” squiggles that meant nothing, fans pushed for a real alphabet.
- Man of Steel (2013) built its own elaborate Kryptonian glyph system for the film.
